“Rai plays today an international role that was not even conceivable only five years ago”. Rai General Manager Antonio Campo Dall’Orto, on the occasion of Cannes MipTV was interviewed by Variety and he explained the revolution and changes he started in the Italian public broadcaster. This new path has already given many international successful products such as I Medici, produced with Lux Vide, Big Light Productions and Wild Bunch and will continue with many original productions.
“What is a distinctive feature of a good public broadcaster” Campo Dall’Orto explained “is the ability to export its contents”. An ability Rai has acquired and has successfully promoted: besides I Medici, we can mention the recent deals closed with Netflix for the distribution of Suburra, the TV series adapted from the film of Stefano Sollima, and those signed with HBO for the serial based on Elena Ferrante’s novels, whose title will be Neapolitan Novels. But there’s more: Dall’Orto mentioned also Non Uccidere (Fremantle Media and Rai Fiction), distributed by Arté in France and Germany, and the future original productions among which is a series based on Il Nome della Rosa of Umberto Eco and Sirene, set in Naples and produced in collaboration with Beta.
What about a possible future collaboration with Amazon? Campo Dall’Orto did not rule out this possibility, and he said his intention is to bring Rai all over the world, trough big changes in contents and platforms. ” Rai must be able to tell all the different sensitivities of the country” affirmed the General Manager ” And we also have to capture the most difficult segment, namely young people, who are used to a different kind of TV: in this context Rai Play was a big success and today it is the app that gets the more traffic in Italy. Rai is the first European public broadcaster in terms of original productions and we are using an innovative and outreaching language. The key factor in this transformation is undoubtedly TV fiction”.
