The new project, signed by HBO and Sky, will come in the shape of a five-part TV series, and it will dramatize the story of one of the worst man-made disasters in history, the catastrophe of the nuclear power plant of Chernobyl. The series will be presented in five episodes which, in Italy, will be broadcasted on Sky Atlantic. The filming is set to ake place in Lituania and it will begin during the spring.
The cast will be composed by Stellan Skarsgård and Emily Watson. Stellan will play the part of Boris Shcherbina, an employee from the department of energy and fuels of the USSR and head of the government commission on Chernobyl established after the tragedy. Watson, instead, will embody the character of Ulana Khomyuk, a nuclear physicist focused on studying the disaster to understand its causes and prevent it from happening again in the future. Both actors already worked together in 1996 in the shooting of Breaking the Waves, winner of the Cannes Film Festival.
In relation to the project, the actress has declared: “This is a significant work and I am honored to be part of it. I cannot wait to start working with this fantastic group of people, and I am particularly excited about working again with Stellan”.
