New regulation for the audiovisual sector in Europe. After the European Parliament, the Council also approves the new rules that will govern the sector.
In 20 days, the text will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union, so that the new rules on the provision of audiovisual media services within the European Union will be effective. The Member States, on the other hand, will have 21 days to transpose the directive into national law. This new regulation covering the entire audiovisual sector to implement so-called cultural diversity in Europe.
All this, starting with the promotion of content made in Europe, which must be at least 30% of the entire offer on online platforms for on-demand streaming such as Amazon Prime Video or Netflix. Great attention is also paid to the viewer, and in particular to minors, preventing violent, harmful or offensive content and incitement to hatred.
The new Directive amends a 2010 Directive on the provision of audiovisual media services. “Since then, the market for audiovisual media services has evolved significantly – according to the Commission’s website -. Rapid technical developments have fostered new types of services, television viewers’ habits have changed and user-generated content has gained in importance. The legal framework is currently being updated to take account of these developments”.
