Georgis Grigorakis’ Digger ruled the scene at the 12th Iris Awards ceremony in Greece, organized by the Hellenic Film Academy.
The emerging filmmaker’s film, which screened at MIA 2015 in the Co-Production Market sector, received 9 out of 14 awards at the Iris Awards: Best Film, Best Director, Best Newcomer Director, Best Screenplay and Best Cinematography to Vangelis Mourikis. Produced by Athina Rachel Tsangari, Maria Hatzakou and Chrysanthi Karfi Koi, in co-production with Gabrielle Dumon, Nikos Katsaounis, Ernst Fassbender, Fenia Cossovitsa and Anna Nikolaou, the film stars George Karvelas, who was awarded the Best Actor Award. The remaining 4 awards are for the technical side: Best Set Design, Best Sound, Best Makeup and Best Special and Visual Effects.
The film is set in the mountains of Northern Greece and focus on a farmer who lives and works alone and has been fighting against an ever-expanding industrial monster that is digging up the forest. The contemporary western also explores the difficult relationship betweena father and a son long lost.
