The new report by European Audiovisual Observatory, “Circulation of European films on VOD and in cinemas”, has been published.
The report, authored by TV and VOD analyst Christian Grece within the Observatory’s Market Information Department, aims to explore the VOD availability of non-national European films released on VOD in cinemas by examining five main metrics: commercial success, the importance of theatrical release as measured by the number of distribution markets, perceived quality as measured by awards and IMDb ratings, recentness of the film measured by the year of production and the origin of a film as measured by country of origin.
As indicated by the report, the offer of non-national European films released on VOD in May 2021 is 71% higher on average than the number of non-national European films released in cinemas from 1996 to 2020. In fact, 3336 non-national European films released in cinemas are available on VOD, compared to 1949 non-national European films released in cinemas over the 25-year period.
This trend is due to VOD services offering the most successful non-domestic European films released in cinemas in the country and increasing their theatrical offer by offering an average of 2264 films released in cinemas in other European countries but not in the country of VOD availability.
