Amazon recently invested $20 mln in Superplastic, the US entertainment brand of synthetic celebrities and luxury toys.
The agreement between the two companies provides Amazon with exclusive rights to create films and TV series based on Superplastic’s characters, who are already famous on various platforms such as Instagram and TikTok.
Amazon made the investment through Alexa Fund, the $200m fund dedicated to technological innovation that already has entertainment, mobility, health and robotics companies in its portfolio.
Superplastic is a Vermont-based company founded in 2017 by Paul Budnitz and creator of Janky and Guggimon, two synthetic celebrities who have starred in various web adventures and can boast social profiles with over a million followers. It is precisely on these two characters that Amazon Studios plans to develop its projects.
