Today 10th October 2023, the second day of the MIA | Mercato Internazionale Audiovisivo, the panel After The Gold (Bear) Rush, Spanish Talent On The Rise took place at Cinema Barberini.
The focus of the panel was the particularly propitious moment Spanish cinema is experiencing, with the recent victories at international festivals and the large number of emerging artists, and the analysis of the different factors contributing to the new turnaround in Spanish cinema today.
Participating in the conversation were Jaume Claret Muxart, Film Director, Strange River, Xavier Font producer at Zuzú Producciones, Inés Massa, producer (check)a Materia Cinema and Sara Gutiérrez, Film Director, Unkind People with the moderation of Cèdric Succivalli, Programmer at Venice Days and ICS President.
The first to speak was Jaume Claret Muxart who outlined the advantages and disadvantages of small productions: “It’s nice to make films with less money because it is faster, but at the same time it is precarious. Public funding is important for the freedom of our cinema, but the times are long.”
Xavier Font, producer at Zuzù Producciones, went on to say: “In this new wave of European films, the part of institutions and academy programmes is essential. They identify new talents and make new films, it is important to pick up this sector. Furthermore, we producers must ask ourselves how we can produce films that combine more freedom and more profit.”
The floor was then passed to Inés Massa, producer at Materia Cinema: “Institutions have played a strong role in the boom of Spanish cinema. Artistic parties and producers are helped by institutions through initiatives such as the industrialisation of schools or internationalisation such as this event, but the road is always the same, tax incentives, institutions, public funds (…) we have to find new ways to share resources and think more in community”.
