The press conference presenting the Official Selection of the 76th Cannes Film Festival took place on Thursday, April 13. Chaired by President Iris Knobloch and Delegate General Thierry Frémaux, the meeting unveiled the festival’s line-up, including new works and excellent confirmations.
Nanni Moretti’s Il Sol dell’Avvenire, Alice Rohrwacher’s La Chimera and Marco Bellocchio’s Rapito are the three Italian titles that will compete for the Palme d’Or. Others include Wes Anderson with Asteroid City, Japanese director Hirokazu Kore’eda with his Monster, Wim Wenders with Perfect Days, and Ken Loach with The Old Oak.
The out-of-competition section, Un Certain Regard, will feature emerging and rising filmmakers from around the world. Prominent among them is a debut feature from Mongolia, “If Only I Could Hibernate” by Zoljargal Purevdash. In addition, Certain Regard will open with the French film “Le Règne Animal” by Thomas Cailley.
“We have seen more than 2,000 films. These numbers are extravagant and, at the same time, reflect the health of world cinema and the aspiration to make films everywhere,” Fremaux said, pointing out, moreover, how the Official Selection is not yet closed and more new films will be added to the list in the coming days.
