“Gradi di libertà” is the first award reserved for Italian VR (virtual reality). It was promoted by FilmMakerFest with the An-Icon research group of the University of Milan in collaboration with Veneto Film Commission, the reference body for the audiovisual sector in the Veneto Region.
AN-ICON – An-Iconology: History, Theory, and Practices of Environmental Images is a five-year research project funded by the European Research Council under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program. Meanwhile, FILMMAKER is an association based in Milan that promotes independent and research cinema, with a focus on documentaries, experimental cinema and young Italian cinema.

The competition is open to all VR unreleased Italian works made between 2019 and 2022 without limits of genre, duration or format. Work-in-progress and prototypes are not allowed.
The initiative aims to promote virtual reality Italian works that stand out for their artistic value, as well as their experiential and technological innovation.
The Selection Committee, made up of Barbara Grespi, Giancarlo Grossi, Luca Mosso, Valeria Polidoro, Sara Tirelli, will choose the works to be shown at the University of Milan as part of the Filmmaker Festival which will be held in Milan from the 18 to the 27 of November 2022. Particular attention will be paid to works capable of reflecting upon the remediation of cinematographic language and its adaptation, as well as its relationship with new immersive media.
On the festival’s final evening, Sunday November 27, the winner will be awarded a prize worth 2,000 euros, plus the offer of a university seminar with the authors.
