Established as a benchmark for the European and International players, over the past editions the Doc Co-Production Market has successfully supported several of the selected features, tv one off and series in their path to completion.
The 2023 Selection committee selected 3 Docuseries, 11 Feature Docs and 4 TV One-Offs
Among the Italian titles selected by the international jury, great space has been given to notable stories and personalities of our country: Her Name is Battle, an Italian-French co-production, the portrait of the famous photographer from Palermo who died a few years ago. Another Sicilian story revolves around Tanino Murana, accused of having collaborated with the Mafia in I didn’t kill Borsellino, while Achille Lauro – The Terror Cruise takes us back to the hijacking of the famous cruise ship. Social issues are narrated in Near Light, five episodes reflecting on the dramatic situation in Italian jails, just as Mia is an integration story on an unconventional family with a charismatic female figure described over five years. Ilona is inspired by Cicciolina’s political parable to depict feminism in Italy and the clash against national prejudice and machismo. The Dreamers is a focus on the resistance of Afghan women against the Taliban’s’ violence and obscurantism. Ocean Drive is the story of the unusual adventure of a father and his children who – due to a terminal illness – realize the dream of crossing the ocean with… two floating cars. The Modigliani Affaire investigates the scandal following the hoax of the stone heads “erroneously” attributed to the Livorno-born artist in 1984, but also a series of anomalous events surrounding the mysterious death of Modigliani’s daughter, Jeanne. Italy is also at the center of MIA Doc’s international titles, as for the French Rome Underground, the events surrounding the construction of the Capital’s subway in an underworld rich in archeology and history. Another French documentary is an attempt to describe Silvio Berlusconi’s Italy in The Country I Love, while the Swiss project Jesus Goes to Hollywood takes us to Matera by means of US blockbusters and the French GEN to the Milan Niguarda hospital where couples resort to IVF.
The Luxembourgian Waiting for Fränk is linked to the One Coin cryptocurrency scandal, while the Israeli Hot Spot recalls the crisis of five teenagers in a school for future Leaders near Jerusalem. Three non-European titles flank the above: the Canadian The Track, which follows the adventures of three aspiring Olympic athletes in today’s Bosnia; Desperately Seeking Rainbows, a disturbing backstage of the Asian porn universe (Taiwan), and the Armenian Price of History that explores themes of contemporary archeology.
