The 44th edition of the Efebo d’Oro – International Film and Narrative Festival at the Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa in Palermo has concluded.
During this 8 days program, the Efebo d’Oro Lifetime Achievement Award – Banca Popolare Sant’Angelo was awarded to Silvio Soldini, while the artist couple Tizza Covi and Rainer Frimmel, who recently won the Best Director Award in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival, received the Efebo d’Oro Nuovi Linguaggi.
The jury chaired by Egle Palazzolo and composed of João Botelho, Robert Cahen, Emanuela Martini, and Nadia Terranova presented the Efebo d’Oro for best film based on a literary work to 100 minutes – Ivan Denisovich (Russia, 2021), the latest work by Russian director Gleb Panfilov, with the following motivation:
“Films are stories; cinema is something else, it is the way you tell stories. Panfilov is a master of cinema; he has filmed only the essentials. The film, an adaptation of the novel A Day of Ivan Denisovič by Aleksandr Isaevič Solženicyn, carries an eternal poetry where suffering, freedom and humanity intersect and in which the direction of the actors is exceptional. The destruction of a fragile human being by a dictatorship is difficult to understand. An excellent book will always be an excellent book and a great film will always be a great film. Long live Panfilov, long live cinema.”
