The film productions in Europe have increased by 47% in the last 10 years, according to the European Audiovisual Observatory. Between 2007 and 2016, around 18 thousand films were made: on the first year, the European market produced 1444 films, which in 2016 ascended to 2124. The documentary productions also increased and reached up to 698 titles in 2016.
The countries which have led this growth are Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain and Italy (53% of the total growth), with France being the biggest player among the countries which have mostly invested in co-productions (566 pieces, a 15% of the total growth). The United States holds its place as main extra-continental investor, while partnerships have been specially signed between European countries, with the duet France-Belgium heading the list.
