Matteo Garrone’s Io, Capitano has been chosen to represent Italy at the 96th Academy Awards.
Yesterday, the Selection Committee established by ANICA, on behalf of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, has met to proclaim the winning title that is going to compete in the selection for the International Feature Film Award category.
Matteo Garrone’s latest film, which has already won a Silver Lion for Directing and the Marcello Mastroianni Award, was selected from a list of 12 nominees.
Awarded by the Commission for “having embodied with power and cinematic mastery the universal desire for the pursuit of freedom and happiness,” it will now have to get through two more selections in the race for Oscar nominations.
Next stop, December 21st, with the announcement of the shortlist that will include the 15 best international films chosen by the Academy.
The film, co-produced by Archimede, Rai Cinema, Pathè, Tarantula, Logical Content Ventures, was also sold by Pathè International to Spanish independent film distributor Caramel Films.
