In 2023 Naples thanks to the production of films and television series generated costs of about 26 million in Naples, of which only 9 million can be attributed to Paolo Sorrentino’s film. Figures that outweigh the inconveniences resulting from closures and occupations, such as when Via Caracciolo was booked by Sorrentino for three days, or when Piazza del Gesù, Calata Trinità Maggiore and surroundings were stormed by the production of “The Equalizer 3” with Denzel Washington.
In 2024, as Sergio Locoratolo, coordinator of Cultural Policies of the Municipality, points out, the aim is to exceed 30 million investments. Among the confirmed titles are “Il commissario Ricciardi,” “Mina Settembre” and the new season of “Mare Fuori.” Antonio Capuano’s new film, tentatively titled “Hungry Bird,” produced by Andrea Leone and Antonella Di Martino for Mosaicon Film, will begin shooting between March and June. Even earlier in the year, shooting will start on Giuseppe Miale’s “Notte fonda,” produced by Mad Entertainment with Francesco and Mario Di Leva. Other titles will be “Costiera,” a U.S. series for Primevideo, and “La fontana rotta” by Maurizio Braucci produced by Avventurosa, Palomar.
Also on the list is a Chinese production, “Made in Yiwu,” again with Mosaicon Film Ltd. whose filming will begin in March.
Also of interest are the urban regeneration interventions resulting from the film use of the city. The Real Albergo dei Poveri, or Palazzo Fuga, the largest monumental palace in Naples, whose rooms had been used by Sorrentino, will become a hub of creativity, thanks to the synergy between the Cinema Office and the City’s Culture Service.
In the days of artificial intelligence, however, setting a film in a city may be an almost entirely virtual operation, so it will be necessary to prepare to sell the city’s image rights. A challenge that will bring in additional revenue, if you come to it prepared.
