According to data from ticketing agency Maoyan Entertainment, the summer of 2023 was a record-breaking season for Chinese film receipts. The previous summer season box office record of RMB17.8 billion, set in 2018, was broken this year, two weeks before the season ended.
Compared to previous years, Hollywood films were imported and released almost weekly between June and mid-August, although local productions were still an essential part of this record-breaking season.
Numerous Chinese productions, spanning different genres including mystery drama, action, historical fantasy, animation, etc., have established themselves by winning over the general public. Among the most successful titles are ‘Lost in the Stars’, ‘No More Bets’, ‘Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms’, ‘One and Only’, and ‘Chang An’.
The Hollywood films that contributed most to the summer box office in China were “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts”, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1” and “Barbie”.
