On the final day of the Edinburgh Film Festival, the report by Saffery Champness and Nordcity for Screen Scotland was released, which showed that spending in the Scottish film sector increased by 55% between 2019 and 2021.
According to the research, in fact, a total of £617.4 million was spent on film, TV and audiovisual content production in 2021, up from £398.6 million in 2019. In addition, film investment and HETV production spending grew by 110%, from £165.3m in 2019 to £347.4m in 2021. In this way, the Scottish film sector has contributed £627 million of gross value added to the country’s economy in recent years. Jobs also increased accordingly, from 5,120 in 2019 to 7,150 in 2021.
Also during this period, Scotland, thanks in part to the opening of new studios, such as FirstStage Studios in Edinburgh, hosted several high-budget productions, including Batgirl, Indiana Jones and the Quadrant of Destiny and HETV shows such as The Rig, Good Omens and Anansi Boys.
“The growth of all forms of production in Scotland between 2019 and 2021 is a phenomenal achievement. It shows us that public investment through Screen Scotland in infrastructure, development, production and skills development, combined with attractive levels of production incentives, is the catalyst for a successful industry,” said Isabel Davis, Executive Director of Screen Scotland.
