Held in the splendid setting of the Nuovo Cinema Barberini, the conference “The New Phase of the Italian Documentary“. Strategies and Alliances for the moment lived by the documentary in Italy together with the renewed interest of the public, testifies to the new phase experienced by a film genre in strong expansion between international ambitions and projects with a more significant economic value.
The discussion was moderated by Angelo Argento, President of Cultura Italiae, who pointed out that “Italy has always had a primary role in the documentary sector.” He continued, “We were among the first to make (the documentary ed.) an exclusive genre. We have to figure out how to remain among the first in the world for quantity and especially quality”.
Chiara Sbarigia, President of Cinecittà said: “We are looking for content that tells the Luce Archive in an innovative way and allows us to promote the new generations. Through documentaries, so open to experimentation, Cinecittà can consolidate itself in the market in a more conscious way”.”We work in synergy with MiC and DGCA to be more competitive”, she continues.
Gloria Giorgianni, CEO and Producer of Anele srl and APA delegate on Documentary at Rai Cinema also highlighted the centrality of documentary in Italy, describing it as “a market that is constantly evolving but difficult to accompany.” He continued, “We need to create an ongoing table that strives to systematize the fragmented nature of the sector’s resources”. “If we operate as we are doing now, we can give the documentary genre the value it deserves,” he continued.
The panel also featured Lucia Borgonzoni, Undersecretary of the MiC, who reiterated how “documentary film should receive funding lines from the Ministry of Culture, also in light of the awards documentaries have received at international festivals”.
Other speakers included Gabriele Genuino, Head of Documentary at Rai Cinema; Andrea Occhipinti, CEO of Lucky Red; Francesco Virga, President of Doc/it; and Fabrizio Zappi, Director of Rai Documentaries.
