The Toronto International Film Festival has announced the full selection of Gala and Special Presentations programs for the 47th edition, which will be held Sept. 8-18.
Notable titles announced include Sarah Polley’s “Women Talking” and Sam Mendes’ “Empire of Light.” All of these films will be screened in the high-profile special presentations section, which also includes the previously announced world premieres of Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans,” Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” and Nicholas Stoller’s “Bros,” as well as several films announced in the festival calendar. Italy also peeps in the Gala section, with “The Hummingbird” directed by Francesca Archibugi and based on Sandro Veronesi’s Strega Prize-winning book of the same name.
TIFF is one of the most important fall festivals and, along with the Venice Film Festival, is an important springboard for prestigious awards. In fact, very often the film that wins the audience award finds itself among the Academy nominees.
Just after its world premiere in Venice, Darren Aronofsky’s latest film The Whale, shot during the pandemic and starring 1990s star Brendan Fraser, will also pass through the Canadian festival. Same route for Florian Zeller’s The Son, Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin, and Joanna Hogg’s The Eternal Daughter.
Direct from the last Cannes Film Festival, among others, the Palme d’Or Triangle of Sadness by Swedish director Ruben Östlund appears on the bill.
