Ahead of the full program, which will be released on Sept. 8, the Zurich Film Festival has unveiled the first art-house films that will open the festival’s Gala Premieres section.
From the drama “The Banshees of Inisherin” by Oscar-winning director Martin McDonagh, to the European premiere of the German film adaptation “All Quiet on the Western Front,” directed by Edward Berger, and the world premieres of Sönke’s “Der Nachname” by Wortmann and “Die Goldenen Jahre” by Barbara Kulcsar.
Thus said the event’s artistic director Christian Jungen: “In recent years the Zurich Film Festival has established itself as a springboard into the awards season. Of the last 10 Best Picture Oscar winners, six have been screened at the festival. This year we will again present to the more than 120,000 visitors and 600 accredited media international auteur films that will later play a role in the Oscar race”.
The titles announced, in addition to those previously mentioned, include Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Broker” The Korean signature drama tells the story of an abandoned child and the desperate search to find him a new family.
Another anticipated film is Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness”. A Sweden, Germany, France, UK co-production that won the Palme d’Or at the last Cannes Film Festival. Then again “Argentina, 1985,” by Santiago Mitre, which tells the true story of prosecutors Julio Strassera and Luis Moreno Ocampo, who dared to investigate and prosecute Argentina’s bloodiest military dictatorship in 1985.
